Nonprofit boards play a critical role in the nonprofit governance. They are accountable for strategic planning and oversight, and financial stewardship. The Board is responsible directory for ensuring the organization is transparent with donors and community members. This isn’t an easy task. The Board faces many challenges which require a significant commitment of time and resource from the Board. This is the reason it’s essential to include the appropriate people on your Board.

A great board is made up of people with different backgrounds, expertise and perspectives that are aligned with the goals of the organization. This gives the Board the opportunity to draw upon a broad range of experience and knowledge that will help it make informed decisions and direct the organization. The Board should regularly evaluate its own performance and effectiveness as well as provide ongoing training.

The Board must also be meticulous and be able to see the bigger picture. This includes looking at how closely the financial activity can be compared to the budget’s requirements as well as assessing what programs and services cost and whether or if those costs are justified, as well as installing appropriate internal controls to stop loss, theft, or confusion.

The Board should also be prepared to serve as ambassadors and advocates of the organization. They must assist the Executive Director create and manage the public brand for the organization. They should be available to the media and community and willing to speak on behalf of the organization when needed.
